Colloquialism M-A. Counting cards is a way to cheat at poker - you keep track of the cards that have come up, how often the deck has been shuffled, and if you're good enough at math (and trust me, Doug, Dr. McCoy is good enough) you can run the probabilities in your head on what cards you will probably get, what cards your opponent has. Counting cards is forbidden in professional card games, of course, and will get you thrown out of casinos.

There was this fascinating documentary about some MIT students who set up an entire card counting ring... was very impressive.
