Re:

In point of fact, Miles must first ask Alison, who then asks me. In all other respects, however, you are entirely correct.

Clarice, I understand your frustration--how could I not, as it is precisely that frustration which drove me to develop the technology in the first place? However, I feel compelled to point out that each individual unit represents, on average, two weeks of painstaking effort, a duration nearly doubled if I find myself without the requisite components immediately on hand; some of them hail from Singapore, others from Germany, and still more from a specialty shop in a remote corner of Switzerland, where they must be made individually to order. Once they arrive, the requirements of the device entail further customization here in my laboratory, and only then can they be assembled and programmed. When Alison's is completed, there will be precisely seven in existence; each represents over four thousand dollars in parts alone.

The research which led to the development of the prototype, on the other hand, consumed over half a million dollars, and five years of my life.

I do not regulate their use so stringently out of a desire to be obstreperous, Clarice. I merely treat them in a manner commensurate to their value, and expect others to do the same.
