A recent conversation with one of our new students gave me some food for thought. I know we offer a fairly wide range of courses by the standards of most schools, public or private, and the independent study option gives you the chance to explore things that interest you but which fall outside course boundaries. But one thing we don't have is much in the way of formal extracurricular activities.

We could change that, if there was any interest in doing so. Is there anything any of you would like to do this year? Anything those of you who attended "normal" high schools have been missing during your time here?

Obviously we're somewhat limited. There are security concerns we'd have to take into account in whatever we wound up doing. Also, any sort of collaborative athletics may be out, at least as an immediate option. I can tell you right now that I expect there will be resistance from the other area schools if we ask to participate in the local leagues. It doesn't mean it can't happen, just that it would take some significant negotiating and there would almost certainly be restrictions involved. An unequal playing field is an unequal playing field, whether it's caused by steroids or your genes.

But there are other extracurricular possibilities. Our historically bad luck with field trips aside, we could certainly see what could be arranged. Our staff is full of talented people; I'm sure we could find a supervisor for nearly anything.

I've already emailed the fencing club at UofM to see if they would allow us in to practice (I'd shuttle people down if they say 'yes'). I am joining regardless and they can just deal.

This would be a good time for me to say that I am going to be putting together a student-run staff for both a school-wide yearbook and possibly a literary magazine. Any students with interests in writing, photography, or editing might find this to be a good opportunity - it is possible that we can arrange some off-grounds trips to city newspapers, editing houses and the like.

It also looks excellent on college applications.
