I have seen the discussion of peaceful activism and I am pleased by it. Idealism is never foolish and wanting to change the world for the better is always welcomed in these halls.
To that end, I would like to announce a new subsidiary of the American Red Cross, the Red X. This program is a new initiative by the Red Cross in which x-gene-positive mutants will be sent to various disaster areas in order to use the powers granted by their mutations to help with disaster relief.
I've spent the afternoon in talks with the director of this new program, who came to me to ask for funding. I've given that, of course, but I have also offered to supply a team of volunteers from among my students and staff.
Please let me know if you would be interested in participating in such a project.

Date: 2004-02-06 08:31 pm (UTC)(Hank? I may need to have easy access to an image inducer somehow, if there's short notice on call moments...)
Re:
Date: 2004-02-07 04:58 am (UTC)Which, of course, leaves only one vital decision yet to be made, and I believe you may very well be just the person to make it: of all the manifold hues available through the wonders of chemistry and a paint mixer, which would you like best?

I'm going to run downstairs now, and hug you silly, you know that? And then hug you some more. Running on down now. Probably shrieking madly the whole way.
*runs off!*

Date: 2004-02-07 10:51 pm (UTC)I think it is unfair that I have to borrow an image inducer from Dr. McCoy - what if he's not there? Then what do I do? Or what if he says "no, you need to do your homework first"? the others don't have restrictions like that!
I'm not saying I should have one to myself, I just think there should be easier access or something.
Re:
Date: 2004-02-07 11:02 pm (UTC)At a guess, they aren't easily accessable for three reasons - so that he can keep track of them, because they're hideously expensive to produce, and so that they don't wind up being abused.
Re:
Date: 2004-02-07 11:21 pm (UTC)Clarice, I understand your frustration--how could I not, as it is precisely that frustration which drove me to develop the technology in the first place? However, I feel compelled to point out that each individual unit represents, on average, two weeks of painstaking effort, a duration nearly doubled if I find myself without the requisite components immediately on hand; some of them hail from Singapore, others from Germany, and still more from a specialty shop in a remote corner of Switzerland, where they must be made individually to order. Once they arrive, the requirements of the device entail further customization here in my laboratory, and only then can they be assembled and programmed. When Alison's is completed, there will be precisely seven in existence; each represents over four thousand dollars in parts alone.
The research which led to the development of the prototype, on the other hand, consumed over half a million dollars, and five years of my life.
I do not regulate their use so stringently out of a desire to be obstreperous, Clarice. I merely treat them in a manner commensurate to their value, and expect others to do the same.
Re:
Date: 2004-02-08 02:36 am (UTC)Kurt is a teacher.
I understand that they are expensive. I understand Dr. McCoy needs to keep track of them...but isn't there an easier way? or someone else who is ALSO able to check them out or something?
I feel like there are added restrictions on me just because I'm me without me doing anything to deserve them.
I hate being purple.
Re:
Date: 2004-02-08 03:20 am (UTC)You're purple. Kurt's blue. Miles is green. Sarah's got a never-ending supply of throwy things.
You don't have as large a monopoly on physical mutation as you would like to think you do.
Re:
Date: 2004-02-08 05:11 am (UTC)Instead I'll just point out that we all have added restrictions just by being us. It's one of those downsides of being a mutant. So does it suck that you have to wear an inducer? Damn sure is. But you just like everyone else has the option of going out without it. If you were anywhere else you would be going without it. Is it unfair? Well to cadge a phrase from my childhood--"I wonder what your basis for comparison is."
I would suggest that if you want easier access to image inducers, you do what Alison has done. Prove that you deserve it. In the meantime, think of this as another step to getting ready to go out. Choose shoes, find driver, get image inducer. Simple.
