Those of you who were interested in the Askani language group, how about Friday night? I'll figure out where, once I have a better idea of how many.
This isn't going to be like the other language classes. They don't like the idea of something that regimented, and they're insisting that knowing the history and cultural context is critical to understanding the language, so the first meeting is going to be a lecture on the 'Short History of Clan Askani'.
And here's the kicker... I'm not actually going to be giving it. Oh, I'll be sitting at the front of the room and it'll be my voice you hear, but it'll be the clan historians borrowing it. Apparently they've worked out the order they're going to speak in and all, so that they'll each have a chance to spout off for a little while on their respective areas of interest. I will make sure that they each introduce themselves so you'll know who's talking to you. They'll also happily take questions.
So. If you're still interested, and not creeped out by the prospect of me acting like I have multiple personalities (well, I do - they're just not mine), we'll give it a try on Friday. I think it'll go well. They're certainly raring to go...

Date: 2004-06-16 09:54 am (UTC)Hey, does this mean we should call you Professors? :)
We talked about this, Jamie...
Date: 2004-06-17 01:35 pm (UTC)Yes, and I said don't encourage me. :)
Date: 2004-06-17 01:47 pm (UTC)Yep...
Date: 2004-06-17 03:23 pm (UTC)Really, just plain old 'Nathan' is good. I'm not going to get shirty.
Re: Yep...
Date: 2004-06-18 03:57 pm (UTC)I'm going to have to start calling my cousin Nate "Jack" more, though, to avoid all possible confusion.

Date: 2004-06-16 10:02 am (UTC)Irony everywhere we go, huh?

Date: 2004-06-17 04:22 pm (UTC)There are/were Askani precognitives? Speaking of tense - that was a terribly awkward sentence to try to think out. It does not make sense easily in any language.

Date: 2004-06-16 12:25 pm (UTC)And did I mention the other thing that I've been thinking about from that dream I had? The staff thingy? Shalmatar, I think it's called?
We should talk...

Date: 2004-06-17 01:51 pm (UTC)Either way, I've always been a sucker for martial arts with staff weapons. Like that scene with Keanu Reeves in Matrix Reloaded where he's batting all those Smith clones around with the metal pole. Not precisely realistic, but fun to watch.

Don't think they would work for you, no...
Date: 2004-06-17 03:25 pm (UTC)I actually have a number of clansmen figuratively lining up to teach me fighting techniques once I have two good legs again. All in self-interest, of course. They don't want me having another month like May...

Date: 2004-06-17 01:43 pm (UTC)~I'm really not sure about this idea. I suspect I'll feel like an ill-used... no word in Askani.~ Marionette. ~After the fact, I mean.~

Date: 2004-06-17 02:16 pm (UTC)~The history/cultural basis will be useful. A lot of the language is steeped in such references - Askani gave me a lot of what I needed, but now and then I stop and wonder what some of the idioms refer to.~
