And the rest of you, as well. Terrorizing Marie-Ange will do little good, and much harm. I have located our four latest missing; they are currently at Fort Dix, in Maryland. I would imagine Betsy is already in surgery; for better or worse, her life is in Nathan's hands now.

The question that devils me is not how Nathan could go so far--after all, he believes in the righteousness of his cause with all the fervor of a zealot--but how so many of the students could be duped so easily into helping him.

I suppose I probably sound quite silly, but I do remember Marie-Ange talking about Dr. Essex sometimes. He encouraged her about things and I suppose they must have spent a lot of time talking. I didn't think very much about it then, but perhaps I should have.

He made me nervous, but mostly for the same kind of reasons the whole school did. I would have gone golfing with him. Maybe 'tis lucky for me the only time he suggested was during church.

I suppose 'twould be hard not to believe if someone you do trust and you know is in medicine says someone will die unless he operates on them.

But I pray he's as good a surgeon as he thinks.

I blame myself. Marie-Ange has told me what she thinks of me and I don't think her opinions are hers alone.

She went to Essex because I was harsh in my disciplinary actions. I wanted to provide structure and I pushed so hard that I forgot to gain their trust first.

Somewhere, I have failed them.

I think full disclosure is the only possible solution. Confession and atonement are not solely the province of the Catholics; perhaps when everyone has returned, I will find the proper words.
